Mailbox and sign installation prep

Do You Need a Utility Locate Before Installing a Mailbox or Sign?

Mailbox posts, address monuments, and sign installations are often placed in high-risk utility zones near the street, sidewalk, and front yard where private sewer laterals, water service, landscape lighting, and other buried lines may pass.

GroundTruth is locating-focused and inspection-only. We help reduce guesswork before digging, drilling, trenching, concrete work, or foundation-related work begins.

Why front-yard digging is not always low risk

The front yard is often the most likely path for private sewer and water service as lines travel between the home and the public connection area. That makes “just one hole” less simple than it sounds.

Common blind spot:
People assume 811 marks everything. In reality, private lines on the property may still need a separate locate.

When a locate makes extra sense

  • Installing near the likely route to the street
  • Deep posts or concrete footings
  • Homes with added lighting, irrigation, or utility modifications
  • Projects combined with driveway or sidewalk upgrades
